Julia
Monotype from Flesh, with Acrylic on Paper; 40"x42"
"Julia"
When I am emotionally so connected to the creative process that I can't have a paintbrush between me and the canvas, I "paint" with my body and hair... It's messy and painful, and the palette is restricted to nontoxic pigments, but the process is fulfilling and the results evocative.

My Place
"My Place"
Acrylic on Puzzle & Panel, 27"x42"
The original is painted on panel with a puzzle-piece texture, revealing that this image is about connecting parts of myself and finding my sense of place. The background is a sunset where I was born in Montana, and the model is a girl in Cape Town, South Africa, where my family lived for 5 years.

15-foot Mural on Concrete Wall
This is a 15-foot tall mural on a concrete exterior wall that I painted in Jackson, Mississippi. Unfortunately, it was painted over by the city recently... I painted it with just five colors of latex paint - mixed into 21 different complex colors in tupperware containers... good memories, sad to lose it!! collaborators: Lawrence Quinn & Daniel Root

AFRIKA
"AFRIKA"
Cut paper collage with UVL varnish; 36" x 30"
I used pieces from clothing, sports, national geo, & other magazines to bring together different 'pieces' of the earth & the human experience, in this face of our mother as a tribute to the Motherland.
History: When the original was first shown in Jackson, MS, Jolivette Anderson (aka The Poet Warrior) and the Black Poets' Society performed. The Poet Warrior wrote "Pieces of You, Pieces of Me," an original poem based on inspiration/connection with this image.
Collectors: private collectors in Mississippi own the original
Prints: High-quality, signed limited edition prints are for sale for $105. These prints are life-size lithography on acid-free paper and are beautiful framed in a variety of colors/styles. Makes a great mantle-piece that will draw admiration & conversation from your house guests! To order, email: rachels_art@yahoo.com or call (208) 215-8357. Free shipping on unframed prints, rolled/tubed.

Terrain
This is a cut-paper collage. Using recycled magazine paper, this is the 5th in a series of miniature landscapes that pay homage to the earth by recycling waste paper to create portraits of our planet's terrain. 4"x6," a truly painstaking miniature work.

In the Middle
"In the Middle"
Deerhide Bas-relief sculpture. This process is fun but challenging: first a high relief mold is made (I sculpt & assemble forms), then the deerhide is soaked in special stiffening solution, then I pound and stretch the hide around the mold, sometimes nailing it in place. After it hardens, I remove it from the mold, discard the mold, and handsew a small deerhide hanger on the back of the piece. I accentuate the shadows with acrylic paint and add gold leaf to the highlights. "In the Middle" has an additional texture, which involves roughing the surface with sandpaper. It hangs freeform and looks attractive on painted, wooden, or brick walls. 9"x11"

Private Workshops for All Ages
...Yes, I do work with kids as well as teaching at the college level. Costs for painting workshops, including professional paint supplies, canvas, and even on-the-spot framing are: $150 for a 3-hour workshop. I teach painting techniques while the student creates a finished masterpiece that we frame together at the end of the workshop. Great for Father's Day, Christmas, etc... truly a quality gift.
